The world's largest lake - the Caspian Sea is situated within the vast continental depression settled over bordering areas of a single Euro-Asia continent.
The Caspian Sea is the world largest lake over 30 million years old. Some day it was connected to the Black Sea and was the residence of the first civilized men. The evidence of such residence along the southern coasts of the lake dates back to the Paleolithic era. The discovery of the skeleton of three men at Huto cave near the city of Behshahr proves that man has been residing in the area for the past 75,000 years ago. Therefore, the civilized man has been residing there not less than 10,000 years. Given the background of man's residence at the Caspian Sea coast, it is natural for various tribes to have resided there. This makes us to take on an unbiased approach towards the names of this vast waterway -- which is the cultural heritage of several tribes -- and the geographical and historical facts about it.

Five nations border the Caspian's shores: Azerbaijan, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Russian Federation. The Caspian is completely landlocked, causing a controversy over whether it is a sea or a lake. Some have predicted that the Caspian holds only slightly less oil than the Persian Gulf.

The northern part of the sea is home to 33 mammal species, 289 plant species and 256 bird species. 120 species of migrating birds, sometimes (even flamingos!) winter on the eastern shores. The Caspian is home to seven different sturgeon species, some of which are found nowhere else in the world. All told the sea hold's 90% of the world's sturgeon. The Caspian Sea has a mean depth of about 170 m (about 550 ft) and is deepest in the south. Its level varies from year to year but averages about 28 m (92 ft) below sea level. In the 1960s and 1970s the level fell substantially, partly because water was withdrawn from tributary rivers for irrigation and other purposes. In 1980 a dike was built across the mouth of Garabogazköl Gulf in northwestern Turkmenistan to reduce water loss, creating a lake that was expected to last for several years. Instead, the gulf dried up completely by 1983. In the meantime, the level of the Caspian Sea began rising again at a rate of about 14 to 20 cm (about 6 to 8 in) annually.
